The public is invited to attend an opening reception for the exhibit, Penokee: Explore the Iron Hills on Saturday, June 23, 1 to 3 p.m. at the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center. The festivities begin at 1:00 with opening comments by naturalist and writer John Bates and an exhibit blessing by Joe Rose. Afterwards, visitors will be treated to a variety of visual, spoken, and musical arts, including music by Frank Montano and Andy Noyes. There will be ample opportunity for conversations with the artists
The exhibit, highlights the area’s metallic mining, natural and geological histories as well as the different cultural perspectives regarding the Penokees, was sparked by the recent mining issues in northwestern Wisconsin. The twenty artist’s displaying their works encourage everyone to consider ways of balancing today’s resource use with the needs of future generations.
