“The Color of North”
Panoramic Photography 1840 to Present

Jamie Young's photographs are featured in the Center's Gallery.Ever wonder what is the Color of North? This exhibit of panoramic photographs possibly answers that question!

Professional photographer Jamie Young has produced a number of stunning images taken around the Madeline Island and Bayfield areas using a large-format panoramic camera that shows not only what the photographer is looking at, but also what is behind him! The results are beautifully crafted photographs of panoramic vistas of the North Woods Region.

In addition to the panoramic photographs, Jamie is also exhibiting a selection of nature images processed in the Van Dyke photographic method. Enjoy this exhibit now through January 1, 2008.

 


“Our Shared Planet”
Environmental Awareness Exhibit

Jim Ramsdell's unique carvings are on display at the Center starting January 22, 2007!This exhibit features amazing lifelike carved birds and animals that excite the eye and spark the imagination!

Each sculpture was carved from basswood gathered from alternative sources by the award-winning wildlife artist and Bayfield resident, Jim Ramsdell, using tools  ranging from a band saw and electric chain saw to intricate electric rotary tools, micro chisels, knives, and wood burning pens.

A special slide show demonstrates the creative process behind these lifelike sculptures. Taking you on an amazing journey through nature to creativity, Jim shares his story of living close to nature in Alaska, and how this allowed him to discover his artistic gift.

The exhibit is available for viewing at the Center on January 22 through April 13, 2007. “Observations of a Lake Superior Fishery”
Photographic Collection

Rus Hurt"s photographs are on display at the Center.Past and present photographic retrospective of the 1975 Johnson Brothers and Anderson Fisheries of Port Wing, Wisconsin and now, thirty years later, as the sons and grandsons carry on the tradition.

This compelling collection of vintage and current photographs by Rus Hurt capture a sense of place and time, culture and heritage of the adventure and hardships of commercial fishing on Lake Superior.

The exhibit is available for viewing until April 1, 2007. ^Top


"River of Words"
Washburn Elementary 4th Grade Students

This display combines perspectives of local professionals, 4th graders, the environment, the arts, and an overall sense of place.

Each piece represents time spent learning the concepts of watershed and the environment in the classroom and on the Whittlesey Creek National Wildlife Refuge.

For many students, this artwork and poetry is their first step towards understanding the complexity and diversity of the area they live in. View until February 28, 2007. ^Top


Jr Duck Stamp Exhibit

View the Wisconsin Jr Duck Stamp Exhibit at the Center this JuneThe Center hosts the Wisconsin Jr. Duck Stamp competition collection May 18 - 20, 2007. The winners will be chosen by a panel of judges and are divided into four different age groups. The Best of Show will compete at the national level with other state winners from around the U.S. The First Place national winning design is used to create a Federal Junior Duck Stamp each year. “Paradise Lost”
Artists on Climate Change Exhibition

Artists expressions on climate change on display at the Center!During this tour, educators will visit our local middle and high schools, and involve the students in science and art activities focusing on climate change. The students' artwork will be included with this exhibit.

A free public program, panel discussion and reception will be held starting at 2:00 p.m. on May 5, 2007. Local organizations with an interest in climate change are invited and encouraged to attend.
