Ancestral Women: A Celebration of Tribal Elders

Thursday, Jul 20, 2017 06:00 PM

Join us for a celebration of Ancestral Women on Thursday,
July 20 at the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center from 6-9 pm. Light
refreshments will be served from 6-7 pm. Dr. Patty Loew, Bad River tribal
elder, will present “Water is Life … a movement gathering momentum in Indian
Country” at 7 pm. Dr. Loew will discuss environmental threats in northern
Wisconsin and why the Dakota Access Pipeline protest resonated so loudly in
Indian Country. The evening will conclude with a performance by the Strawberry
Moon Singers.

The Wisconsin Historical Society is sponsoring the program
and Ancestral Women exhibit of hand-woven portraits by Mary Burns.
Through hand-woven jacquard weavings, the Ancestral Women exhibit honors and
celebrates elder women, one from each of the 12 Wisconsin Native American
Tribes. The exhibit will be on display until October 1, 2017. For more
information call (715) 685-9983.
